DEERFIELD, 19 May, 2020 – Baxter International Inc. (NYSE:BAX), a global leader in clinical nutrition, announced today it will provide financing for a grant-funded fellowship coordinated in conjunction with the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). The grant will significantly contribute to the ESPEN Fellowship Grants initiative and it will increase the number of early-career researchers awarded, allowing to fund and develop more original research in topics related to nutrition and metabolism.

“Scientific research is essential to understanding the vital contributions of nutrition therapy to patient health, and to discovering new innovations,” said Luigi Antoniazzi, vice president, Clinical Nutrition, Baxter. “We are proud to support the research of clinicians who are early in their careers to help establish a foundation for successfully treating clinical nutrition needs in practice.”

The ESPEN Fellowship Grants launched in 2011, and since then have funded more than 60 researchers and projects covering key areas like weight loss due to cancer (cachexia), chronic diseases, artificial nutrition, critical illness, protein metabolism, glycemic control and many more. Projects are selected by the ESPEN Scientific Committee based on several criteria including quality and feasibility of the project and track record of the institution and project supervisor, among others.

“As previously announced, ESPEN is pleased to confirm in these difficult pandemic times that the 2020 ESPEN Fellowship program will continue to fund innovative research from early-career awardees, to enhance knowledge in the field of clinical nutrition and metabolism” said Professor Rocco Barazzoni, chairman, ESPEN. “We are particularly pleased to be able to continue this important action under the current difficult circumstances; we trust that new knowledge will continue to strengthen the role of clinical nutrition in all fields of patient care. For the 2020 awards, we are also very pleased to gratefully announce the non-restricted support by Baxter, Inc, which will significantly contribute to maintain the high level of funding resources. The altruistic contribution by Baxter also becomes particularly meaningful under the ongoing global restrictions, and it will allow to increase the number of awardees and funded projects.”

Applicants must be current members of ESPEN and submit completed applications no later than 31 May 2020. Click here for more information about the ESPEN Research Fellowships, including full criteria for application.
